As He approached and saw the city, He wept over it, saying, “If you knew this day what would bring peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. For the days will come on you when your enemies will build an embankment against you, surround you, and hem you in on every side. They will crush you and your children within you to the ground, and they will not leave one stone on another in you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.” Luke 19:41-44 (NKJV)
On the day that Jesus entered Jerusalem for the last time, many of His disciples followed Him, singing praises and honoring Him as King. There were also a great number of people in the crowd because of the miracles they had seen, the things they had heard, and perhaps the things they hoped to see and hear. Even now, the people were so intently seeking the comforts of life that they had missed the opportunity for eternal peace. They had failed to recognize the presence of the Prince of Peace, who had spent three years proclaiming the terms of peace.
Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NKJV).
Jesus offered peace for their souls – the peace of knowing the Redeemer, of having the eternal presence of the Messiah – the One Who would guard their hearts and minds in peace – regardless of what was to come. Their eyes were blind; their hearts calloused to the reason for His Coming. They had missed it! And because of this, Jesus wept over the city.
During this Holy Week, will you seek the comforts of life – or the Assurance of life that can only be found in the Prince of Peace? His terms of peace are still available to you. Don’t miss them!
The King is coming!! Will you be ready?
